Evaluation Question 1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Different genres of music will all follow very different conventions in their music video. For example, R'n'B music/ hip hop will usually feature flashy, expensive jewellery, drugs, crime and the sexualistion o women. A convention is a thing you are most likely to expect see in a certain genre. Another example of a convention in pop music is fast paced, dancing scenes, guitars, drums and sometimes flashing bright lights. Conventions are usually exaggerated for effect, reaction and response. Andrew Goodwin talks about the structure to a music video and will usually lie within one of three brackets. Illustation- Where the video tells a story. Amplification- when the video introduces new meanings to the words of the song, which might not have been thought of before. Or Disjuncture- where there is little or no connection between the video and the music. I would say our video is probably illustation/amplification as I wouldn't say that our video displays entirely what the song is talking about. The video we made has new layers of meaning and sometimes have no connection at all between the song and the video.

Carol Vernallis talks about editing and camera work. She says that most music videos are continuity edited, which means they flow and make sense, which I would say our video does. She also mentions a video base track, which is the most freuently used footage during the duration of the video. I would say we do have a base track but we have mixed up the film a little, so its not that clear. We didn't move the camera in time with the music but I have a feeling that it would've looked really good.

The bike song has influenced our video massively I believe, like with the video matching the sound of the music. The drums in the bike song begin to go much faster and the video is editing to the sound of the drums, like our video is edited to the sound of the claps.
I made some GIFs to accompany this blog to show how, without the music unfortunately the pace of the music is in with with the editing of the video

The bike song also uses a wacky idea of having the bikes have their own mind, which is very fun and exciting and it is similar to our video because our band play on apparatus in childrens playgrounds, which looks equally as fun and different as bikes having their own mind!

Another music video which greatly inspired us was Hey Soul Sister! by Train. In this song a Ukulele is used in the begining to introduce the song, just like ours is. It is a very recognisable instrument and helps the audience understand what type of music the song is.

Another example of how we have used conventions of a music video is the type of clothes we have chosen to wear. Aykut chose to were a checked shirt for each clip because it is relevant to the type of music our band would play. One direction's, Niall is wearing a checkered shirt in their music video "Gotta be you". Their genre music is very different but they are still young and hip, like us!!

The girl band, the Saturdays are known for being very colourful. The type of band we are, gives off a very colourful vibe too, that's why we all agreed to wear our most bright coloured clothes when we filmed. This gives off the impression that we are a colourful band ourselves and we like expressing how we feel through bright, vibrant colours!

Another convention of a music video is for the performer to look directly into the camera, which Aykut was instructed to do lots of time. This creates a relationship with the artist and demands focus, it creates the artists image in your mind and is individual to everyone.

In our music video we wear sunglasses, because its a trendy, cool accessory to mess around with and can be used in lots of fun, different ways. We used sunglasses in our video to add to the effect that our band is young and at the same time we're pretending were somewhere in the sun, which I think lots of artists like to do nowadays because of the unpredictable weather in england!

Another convention of a music video is showing the action of what you are doing, for example talking about loving to dance and dancing in the music video. It amplifies the song through a visual aspect and visa versa. In our video it is the "smoking" which is also portrayed in the Killers video "Mr Brightside"

I don't think my digipak alone is that conventional. It has a lot of cartoon imagery, which suggests that our band is quite playful, but also look on the brighter side of life because of how colourful the digipak is. I used the ducks throughout my digipak because they give it a lighter, simplistic feel and they're included in the video. The sky, sun, grass and rainbow make the digipak look fun and interesting and i think the bright colours would make people pick it up. I know a few album covers which feature cartoon imagery, like Mika, Kanye West and the Gorillas, who'd i'd expect to have an album cover which is different to normal album cover. I've noticed that most of the album covers, apart from Mika's, the boy who knew too much, don't feature their picture this may be because they believe they are already well known and there is no need, or maybe it doesn't look as good with their photo.

My advertisement however, I think it much more conventional and still features parts of the album cover in it. I used star ratings to show the response we got from magazines which is much more handy for advertisements as usually you just glance and star ratings are easy to read and understandable. I put the barclays mercury prize award on their to show that our album has been noticed by a prestigious company. i tried to make my advertisement very colourful so it would stand out and catch peoples attention. I also put logos from itunes, amazon and ebay on, so its very easily avaliable. I looked at noah and the whales advertisement to compare it to our bands. Theirs is very simplistic and used the same image as on their album cover so it is easily identifiable. It doesn't initially look like an advertise for an album, although when you read what is wrote it is clear that it is trying to promote Noah and the Whale in a folk like in a simplistic way.
